News Air Force buys 2200 new PS3's for supercomputer

    Air Force buys 2200 new PS3's for supercomputer

    The US Air Force is buying up 2200 Playstation 3's for “architectural studies”, utilizing Sony's cell processor with it's capabilities to process 150 gigaflops. These 2200 will be added to the existing 336 PS3 supercomputer they already have set up.

    ps3's are manufactured by asustek in taiwan.


    edit: well the majority of the new ones are made by asus. and ibm makes the processors, nvidia makes the video card. ect ect.

    I'm surprised they don't build a supercomputer using nvidia gpu's because they can run real code on the 9 series. Might have been cheaper to start over but who knows.

    gtx280 scores 933 GFLOPS Single-Precision, 90 GFLOPS Double-Precision

    PS3 according to wikipedia:
    204 GFLOPS Single-Precision, 15 GFLOPS Double-Precision

    im guessing this is partially a marketing exploit, and that the numbers have been exaggerated.

    want to see their server room before i am convinced at this.

    yup. they have quad-sli capable 1200W PC Power & Cooling, Ultra makes a 2000W but you need a 30A circuit just to use it.

    i meant to say that the 2200 ps3s is semi-fake.

    i believe the gtx280 can do it because i want to quad-sli them. hahaha nvidia had a deal for quad sli gtx80s (i think) and a mobo for $1699.99
