Clunking sound

Clunking sound

I started to notice some clunking sound on my rear suspension. I hear it when I drive over road imperfections.

What are some possibilities? Struts? CV?

Does it sound like a metal-to-metal clunk? In my case, I know for a fact that my all my struts need to be replaced but the rear passenger has that metal-to-metal sound. I suspect the strut bumper, that or the support assembly on the top of the strut. Im hoping its not the latter one.

Im no expert but I dont think our cars have rear CV joints. I thought CV joints are the ones that connect the tranny to the wheels or something....

oh yeah, you're right lol. it sounds like metal-to-metal clunking.

Check your stabilizer links and bushings. Otherwise yeah it could be struts getting old. Our cars have no rear cv joints. My car has clunking noises when its really cold out due to the gas in the struts freezing up.

there's no CV in your rear suspension.. check the top nut of your strut, it might've gotten loose. Also try to wiggle the control and trailing arms, the bushings might've gotten less bushy

do you mean the 3 nuts that hold the strut mount? I ask because I have the same problem, actually, one can grab the spring and wiggle the entire strut assembly and notice it is loose. i have to diagnose if its just lose nuts or some other strut component.

check the three nuts and the center nut on the strut rod. You really shouldnt be able to wiggle the suspension at all. Other than that there is no mechanical fastners (besides the 2 nuts on the bottom) and your strut or top mount is busted.

is this something i should have checked out asap? i ask because i am just sooooo busy with school.

what size nuts are the ones on the strut mount, just in case they are loose?

and since I am changing out my battery and replacing it with an optima red (hehe), what size nuts are on the battery terminals too?

IMHO the longer you wait the more severe the problem might be. I should have gotten mine fixed a long time ago.

The 3 nuts should be a 12mm
The one nut on top of the strut rod should be a 14,16, or 17

battery teminal should be a 10 or 12 unless some jackass replaced the terminal with a american made one the use a SAE nut

I figured out what the noise was, it came from bad rear swaybar endlinks. it's fixed now after replacing them.

btw im finally back to stock exhaust manifold

Common issue with mysterious rear-end clunking in MR2s as well..congrats on fixing it
