mobil 1 for the win! just out of curiosity, my friend asked me this question and i didnt know what to tell him. will anything bad happen if switching from regular to synthetic? he has some generic chevron oil in it now and want to upgrade to castrol or royal purple. any input would be great.

my 240sx currently has 10w 40 mobile 1 fully synthetic. i'll be goin royal purple 10w 30 in about a month.

i put castrol 10w-30 in wifes truck
(she drives that truck like an off-road ferrari!!)

Castrol GTX 5w30 in the Tundra..Mobil 1 5w30 synthetic in the 2.

10w30 in mine. In a couple years when the new motor project gets rolling (have $6500 lift project first), it'll end up with 10w40.

I use nothing but Mobil 1 on my car. I use 5w-30 for my engine but it all depends where you live and the temperatures for viscosity use.

castrol high mileage for my interga and redline for the evo8. why is everyone using mobile1 is just because every corolla owner use it or you notice a better performance im not hating im just wondering.when i had my corolla i use castrol full synthetic 2yrs,royal purple 1yr and back to castrol just because in maui there was only one shop selling royal purple and couldnt afford it(over price)

I use mobile because it is the best stuff walmart sells. But for gear oil I splurge for motul since it only have to be changed every 30K or so.

mobile too here. walmart carry royal purple too, but with 8 bux a quart i wouldn't even go near it plus it just a corolla with no mod.

Exactly, I've heard great things about Royal Purple, but I saw it at Walmart for $8/qt. And I thought that was a ridiculous price. I'm sure Castrol Syntec is just fine

So I have a question that's related. When you guys use synthetic, how ofter do you change your oil? I used to change my Jeep every 2,500 miles with conventional and now every 5,000 with synthetic. I don't trust an oil change to last 10,000 miles like some people say.

To find out exactly how long you can run the oil - you need to send off a used oil sample for analysis - there is no other way to do it. Each car will be different - some can extend out the drain intervals, some cannot. Oil quality now has taken a quantum leap ahead of where they used to be 10-20 years ago. A 3000 miles oil change is considered exceptionally conservative - even for guys running on the track or forced induction.

Myself - I have run synthetic oils for as long as 12K-15K miles in my cars - oil and filter help up, additive package was on the verge of giving out (TBN of 2 and some change, when new it was around 10-12).

So I dropped my oil change interval about half - now looking at between 5K-8K oil change intervals, backed up with UOAs atleast once a year. Oil drains look good, UOAs come back clean with plenty of protection left in the additive package.

right now i change at every 5k on both cars using amsoil. i want to get it tested to see if i can go longer, but i keep putting it off.

I use Royal Purple in the MR2's transmission..Mobil1 because it's decent, relatively inexpensive and available.

I'll go up to ~5k on my truck with dino - usually ends up being more often just because I only drive it about 6000 miles a year. My car's oil looked pretty dark last time I changed it, so I'm going to run ~2500mi for a change or two to see if it looks any better. I should send a sample out to get analyzed..

I've never heard of sending a sample to get analyzed. Where do you send it? Can you get it done at an auto parts store?

Standard test package runs about $20 or so + shipping. If you want to check TBN or a measure of the oil's effective acid/corrosion buffering additive package - costs an additional $20.

They send you free sample containers - you fill them up, according to the directions, and ship them back to them (USPS shipping is fine, oil is not considered a hazardous product if you used the their sample containers (sample jar, baggie, and exterior sample container = little chance for leaks). After they get a hold of your oil sample and test it - you can opt to get an electronic copy of the test results sent to your email. Average for me is about three days from when I drop off the container at USPS to when I get the results in my inbox.

Probably a good idea to just do it once - even if you don't plan on going the extended oil change route - just to see how the engine is doing. Some engines, show little to no wear metals, some will have a huge amount - even when running normally. Good to have a baseline for yourself.

This was for my Matrix, bought it used - and it was pretty beat. Original owner didn't ever change the oil - just kept topping it off as needed. The OEM original oil filter was still on the car when I got it with about 31K miles on it!!! Motor was gummed up pretty good - you couldn't even wipe the dipstick clean - as it had a prety thick coating of varnish and carbon deposits on it. Took valvecover off - was pretty nasty under there.

Couple of 1000 mile oil change intervals with 0W-30 motor oils + Rislone (old school additive - basically a 20W straight oil with tons of additives - for a "easy" flushing solution). Pulled the valvecover off, checked valve clearances and any signs of heavy varnish and gum deposits - that point little to none were left. Ran two 4000 mile oil change intervals with Mobil 1 5W-30 (the older "good" stuff, the one with lots of moly in it) + 1/2 can of Lubrizol additive to each 4000 interval (race shop uses it on their rebuilds of older engines to help flush stuff out - pretty low viscosity, liquid like Seafoam), the report was for the final short oil change - went to 5000-7000 mile oil changes afterwards.

Note that the viscosity that was driven down by the additive and the amount of insoluables floating around (still amount normal, but I expected that after such short oil change intervals). Wear was basically nil and to this date, the engine has been as clean and that first report, plus doesn't burn a drop of oil.

I use Toyota 10w30 motor oil and filter on my Corolla and my Lexus ES300. Gotta love dealership discounts. Did not ever had problems using oil. When I replaced the oil pan on my corolla, crankcase was very clean. I drove the hell out of the corolla and havent given me any issues. that was my most prized car that i regret selling.

Yeah, got to love a company that really enjoys what they do.

i just put in 2 litres of shell 10-40w it last abut a 1000km before it leaks out of the engine .Note to self find out where the leak is
