    5spd swap questions

Okay Im going to be doing a 5 speed swap to my car prolly around spring time. So i have all winter to save up but i have a couple questions considering i dont know much about doing this stuff.

I know everything needed thanks to looking up some other threads but i have a couple other questions.

    |Will a 5 speed tranny from a 7th gen corolla work in an 8th? I dont think so but they have so many more 7th gens at the junkyard and no 8th gens around here.

    |Will any 7th gen parts work for the 8th gen? Aka Shift linkage clutch and brake pedal. Slave cylinder and anything else.

    |Im just trying to find the easiest way to gather all the parts. The closest 5 speed tranny is about 40 miles away from me and the junkyard i always go to which has like 20 7th gens gives me really good deals.

Any help would be appreciated. |Thanks

No, the bellhousings are different.. won't work unless you swap the bellhousings.. much easier to go with one origionally mated to a 1ZZ or a 6spd mated to a 2ZZ

shift linkage + shifter - ONLY model yrs 96-97 (93-95 might, i wouldn't take the chance tho)
    brake pedal - yes
    clutch pedal - yes

I used car-parts.com to locate nearby junkyards with 5spds when I did the swap

^^ I think so, but the gear ratios would be all different, and I don't think you would have any power.

well they would be closer wouldn't they? Man that would make for a nice turbo tranny

I would like to do it and boost my 1zz then and if the engine blows then swap it out and keep the tranny and do a 2zz swap.

Sorry to dig up one of my old threads but I figured it would be better than starting up a new one. So for the past few days I think ive looked at over 50 pages on here and who knows how many on toyotanation and cant find a thing.

Just want to know how to tell the differences from a 7th gen 5 speed tranny from a 8th gen one. Like number of bolts to mount up to the motor or just anything thats noticeable on the outside of the tranny. I just want to make sure I am getting the right one from a guy I know. I found a couple of codes on the tranny if these help?

    Trans: 1NXBR12E8 and YZ315500 and also 15-2
    Flywheel: 7Z8D
    Shifter PAG-GF33
    Slave Cylinder: B45518 AISIN

Hope these codes help. I also have a bunch of pics of the tranny if any of you guys need more info.

    Thanks so much

Word to the wise. (from someone who has done the same conversion you're trying)

Don't try to piece together crap from different generations. Find a wrecked rolla in a junkyard and go pull everything you need. If you try to get crazy with mismatch parts, the results could be a disaster.

As for the 2ZZ tranny question. Yes, it would bolt right up, however I'm not too sure about the alignment of the mounts. I'm sure the two on the bell should be fine (bottom mounts) but the top mount I'm a little suspicious of. Then again, I haven't done too much looking into this soooooo... yeah... bolt up at your own risk. :)

All the stuff I have is from the same car, a 2000 corolla. I just want to confirm this is the absolute right tranny before I rip my car apart. Ill post pictures up when I get home later tonight.

stuff looks right but that stuff looks seriously beat. I would replace that clutch fork bearing at a minimum, clean up the other stuff. do you also have a clutch disc and cover? only thing I really see missing

    ie.. this stuff:

well you really don't want to reuse the clutch disc and pressure plate anyways.. a new OEM Exedy clutch kit is only like 120-130 shipped and it come with the release bearing also.

The tranny is I can tell immediately is not a 7th gen tranny (since you asked) it has to be a 8th gen or up looking at the bell housing. Notice it only has the starter boss on the intake side, the C52 on the 7th gen has two starter bosses. Also the left side engine mount is a "ear" bracket. The 7th gen has a plate bracket.

Make sure you resurface or replace that flywheel.. also get new flywheel and clutch disc bolts as they are not interchangeable with the auto's flex plate/ torque converter bolts.

The rubber bushings on the shifter cables are FUBAR, get brass ones from speedsource or ebay.

And you might want to replace the clutch master and slave cylinders. The master cylinder is a pain to get to once bolted up.

It look like you are missing the bracket for the rear engine mount. There is a bracket on the rear engine mount that are not interchangeable with the automatic. It's about $40 from toyota.

lastly it's missing some miscellaneous clips for the shifter cables.. those are a few bucks from toyota also

Okay thanks for all the info i really appreciate it. The tranny has 74K miles and yes im going to be replacing the whole clutch assembly (the guy told me the clutch was gone anyways) And yeah after doing research looking from when you(JspeX102) did your 5spd swap I noticed that the 7th gen trannys have the two starter boss's. I just wanted to make sure.

I couldnt believe how heavy that flywheel was! So i looked around on amazon and came across a light weight one.

    http://www.amazon.com/Aasco-7428-11..._2?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1233548029&sr=8-2

anyone have any experience with it??

Also.. does anyone know where I can find a short shifter? Possibly a trd one? If im doing the swap and everything is ripped apart anyways I might as well add one of those in ;)

I have my old TRD short shifter than I've been meaning to put up for sale. It was originally designed for the 98-02 but fit my 96. I'll sell it cheap since its missing the shift knob and the previous owner decided to cut the rod down an inch to make it shorter. Selling it because I had to buy a 6spd shifter. There are pics in my 5spd swap thread.

I'm pretty sure you can get a fidenza or another name brand flywheel for cheaper than the amazon one.

Okay cool. Ill look around for more flywheels and all that when the time comes closer to the swap. As for the short shifter how much would you want for it? I currently am in the process of buying some other stuff for the car and have the 5spd swap on hold till summer but when tax time comes ill have some money to play around with. I found a shift knob on ebay a couple nights ago that I really liked.

do you think it would work with the short shifter?

Let me see what size flat rate box it'll fit in.. then it'll either be around $8 or $12. The shifter is still in the office and I don't stop in much during school.. I will surely PM you and let you know by the end of the week.

    Update!

Hey guys good news! The 5spd swap goes in in about 2 1/2 weeks! I cant wait. Ill be posting pictures as the progress goes but i wont be able to make a full DIY or anything. Me and my buddy only have about 2 full days to complete this. The last thing that I need to order is a clutch. I found an Exedy OEM replacement clutch on Ebay for 119.95 shipped. The dealer has an outstanding 226,000 feedback scores with a 99.6% positive feedback.

    Heres the link:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/00-0...ptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

Do you think its legit? Ive ordered numerous products off ebay but a clutch is sketchy IMO. So any input would be appreciated.

On that rear bracket comment... I didn't have a problem with the front and rear bottom brackets. The only thing I had an issue with was the top, driver side bracket whenever I did my swap.

    Just an FYI
