You'll have to ask them. Some places do and some places don't.

Yes as long as they have a Visa reflector logo .... You can use it as a charge card but for only the amount of money in your checking account not over ... For example if you only have 500 dollars you cant go buy 1,000 dollars worth of stuff ... And the money doesnt com eout immediatly so always check your bank statements .....

But some with hotels, just cause it has a Visa logo doesn't mean they'll take it. Rollatuner is right call the hotel first

That sounds right. If you reserve over the phone (no matter if its a check card or credit card), they reserve the amount until you checkout at which point they'll deduct the money.

Typically with a check card, you can use it as a credit card. when they ask debit or credit, then you say credit and they run it through like that. Thats how I use mine all the time.

debit card counts as a credit card. debit card requires no signature and running it as a credit card requires id and signature. the only thing is that if the hotel uses it as a deposit, than the amount of the deposit is usually frozen from you account. so if you have $1000 in your account and the hotel requests a deposit/hold of $200, then you will not have access to that $200 and it could take anywhere from 1-15 days to be put back into the account.

And sometimes they hold more than the cost of the room

This is also true for gas stations. Some authorize $1.00 and some will require an authorization of $100.00. I've seen one gas station request an authorization of $500.00. But typically its $1.00. Once the real charge posts to the account then the authorization falls off.

it depends on the gas station. When I was in NJ, this one spot authorized $100.00. I didn't know that until I got to work and saw the authorization and was like, WTF?! Then someone wrote in about a problem they had and when we looked, that one gas station authorized 500.00. I think it mainly happens to those less popular gas stations. cause the big named ones only do 1.00.

All I know is in Florida .. You can use the debit card with a visa logo for hotels , motels , airline tickets , car rental , time share tours , everything and anything you can imagine a credit card can be used but only the amount of your balance in your checking account .... Sorry to hear where you live they dont do that ... Please check all that applies to your state .. Thank You

    another question:

now that im here at the hotel and they accepted my credit card....do they normally charge a security deposit for the time you stay and then refund you the money afterwards? because im kinda FUBAR they were only supposed to charge me 350 max and there is 460+ hanging on my bank account so i think its like a 100 dollar fee...anyone familiar with these policies? thankfully its a holiday weekend and i can get to the bank before the charges post tuesday at midnight...but still....WTF

Pretty much what was stated before. They place a hold on your card for the full nights stay and sometimes a bit more just in case you use any of their services or trash the place and you try to leave without paying or whatever. But once you pay when you leave, they should release any holds and it will drop off your account in 3-4 days.

The hotels dont take a security deposit but your credit card stays open after you leave just in case you have done any damages or steal towels . Then when approve they just charge what the bill was... :)
