    octane boosters

    hey i was wondering if any one has used any octain boosters and if so do they really help for track races

    what brands are good ones

    It doesn't do that much good. You're better off using real 100+ octane race fuel.

    What's the point?

    And using high-octane leaded fuel is pointless without extensive modification and tuning for your car to be able to handle it.

    Very true. It's the same as using premium instead of regular gas in our cars. Just wasting money.

    well... only worth while stuff to do would be, amplifying the ignition, and advancing ignition timing... to start...
    then you gotta raise the compression just to make it little harder on the gas, for that fuel to completely burn.

    then I really dun know what else you gotta mod.... the upping the compression part is optional

    Well the reason for higher octane is for higher compression engines, or else the fuel will combust prematurely. So like every one else said in our engines its pointless, unless its rebuilt for higher compression.

    High octane gas is not cheap. LOL :D Cheap power doesn't really exist. Intake, header, and exhaust is as basic as you can get.

    haha i have all thoughs i just need a little bit more edge so i can beet my friends on the track

    im so close maybe half a car lol

    p.s. its not street racing it is all done on a private track

    If it's just half a car length, eliminate the slack in your throttle cable and practice on shortening your reaction times and perfecting your launch. Skill will overcome power in these instances.

    i dont quite understand how to take up the slack

    would a short shifter help much

    also is half a car on a good race haha

    im racing a ford focus zx3 with intake header back and chiped and

    short shifter

    Short shifter will help as well. Polyurethane engine mounts will also improve launch. Here's the diy on how to eliminate the slack. http://vamp.darkravers.net/cpg/thumbnails.php?album=75 But why worry about going fast in a straight line. That's no fun. Throw some curves in there to mix it up. :D

    Also have to remember that octane boosters only add a couple of points to the fuel that you pour it into. Points, just like in carats for gemstones. So if a can says adds 6 points to a tank of gas (assume that you have a full tank of 87 octane, one can for every 10 gallons) - then it will mean that 6 points added to your tank will only raise the octane from 87 to 87.6! Not even close to being worth it on a basically stock system. If you want high octane - they generally sell that on the track - usually around $6-$10 a gallon. Have to watch it, many tracks still sell "leaded" gasoline - don't want to make a stupid mistake and run that in the car.

    Want to have the easiest edge in track racing for the best price/least effort - lighten the car. Lightweight wheels and tires (don't run large diameter alloys, unless they are decent ones - remember the larger tires will also weight more). Get rid of all the crap in the trunk, lose unnecessary weight inside the cabin (seats, etc.), run with less gas in the tank (each gallon is 6 - 6.5 lbs), lower tire pressures just a hair to improve traction (not too much, still want to have enough to support the sidewall and tire carcass integrity.) Every 10lb drop gets you an effective 0.4 - 0.8 HP gain - ie, powertrain has less of a load on it.

    Short shifter, solid engine mounts, drop the suspension, practicing launch techniques, better rubber, performance clutch and pressure plate, good tune up, etc. are all easy mods that will not change the character of the engine (ie. not messing with the engine)and make sure that you are making most of your available power.

    Engine mods - you have to go big or go home. The engines are pretty well optimized - mave to pump money and time into it to get tangible results. Cheap way is nitrous - if done correctly, the least expensive way to get more power. Added to that - support for Toyota Corollas are harder and harder to find - most end up going a custom route for big power. Even typical bolt ons have mixed results - given enough time and effort with tuning and a decent programmable air/fuel/timing computer (eManage, Camcom, Unichip, Megasquirt, Hydra, etc.) - you can get the most from your mods.

    Also technique is important if you plan on dragging for fun. You'll run into terms like staging shallow or deep and the effect of rollout on ETs and your trap speed. Of course, depends on the track as well - some automatically account for this effect - need to know if it does or not and what it will do to your "true" times.

    corolla is not made for speed. if you want speed go for another car. any money put into a corolla to go "fast" is 99.999% a waste.

    Keep it fun to drive. You can make it quick. Just don't bother to make it fast because it will never be. I'm getting a second car for that exact reason. :)

    mazda speed 3 is scary to drive. all the torque steer. it has too much power for a FWD car.. i dont' like it.

    AWD wouldve been more expensive. As it is the MS3 is the best deal for 25 grand. IMO
