We truly do appreciate the custom-car scene, in all of its various guises. There is, however, a problem with the custom Prius you see above and in the video embedded after the break. Generally speaking, the goal of modifying a car is to either A) make it go faster or B) make it look better.

When Classe Gustafson, Elvis Häggbom and Kenny Kyrk from Sweden had finished spending $184,000 customizing a Toyota Prius, they had accomplished neither. This Prius-trocity, which was modified for a television show, is anything but subtle. It lost two doors during its transformation from mild-mannered hybrid eco-mobile to whacked out sport compact that just happens to get good fuel economy, though it did get scissor-style portals that are nearly impossible to open in the process. And it also gained a huge honkin' stereo and the body-kit from a Volvo SUV. The over-the-top paint-job is the final touch. The Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain, however, went untouched save for the obligatory fart-can exhaust. Nice.

I hate it with a passion. :D It defeats the purpose of being economical and doesn't even look or perform good after dumping all that money into it. If I had to pick a modified Prius, it would have to be the turbocharged Blitz one.

a tuned corolla defeats the whole purpose of an economy car....dont be a hypocrite.

no offense, but your corolla probably performs worse with than that prius does. the thing does have like 225ft/lbs of torque....

It's the same for everyone on this board. LOL :D The difference is the amount of money we put into it. 184,000 really does defeat the purpose.

Worse than stock or worse than a Prius? The Prius may have torque, but it has hardly any horsepower, accelerates like a snail, and can't handle worth crap. Hence why it's an economy car built especially for gas mileage. As for worse than stock, every time you modify a car, you sacrifice power for economy naturally. I'm still getting over 30 mpg though.

not exactly. lightly modifying a base model economy car can be silly. but modifying a sporty sport compact (which several different model corollas are) makes a little more sense.

think gts and xrs... not your car.

Some would think the opposite. Generally speaking, a base car would have less gadgets on it that might add a couple of lbs. Now I will do my research later on but if the base model corolla has the same engine/transmission as the corolla S, I would go for the base model corolla and just work myself up.

Why buy an M3 if a 1series is as fast? Just add aftermarket parts to make it equal the M3, LSD for example.

    Just my $2.

    TOPIC:
I think having a 'good looking' prius isnt bad. That particular one looks hideous to us, but what about to the people who made it? They made it look like that because they liked it.

Because the M3 has many more performance advantages that make it an all-around better car. Acceleration isn't everything.

And the 1 series looks fugly imo.

True, but my point still stands. Get the base model, mod it a little and end up being as fast or faster than the higher model. What would matter most is labor. It isnt too hard to squeeze a couple more whp, whats hard on the pocket is labor costs.

    @ TOPIC:
After having some time to watch the clip, I was thinking maybe they wanted it to look like something other than the prius. I actually liked the outside until how the doors opened and the rear diffuser.

The inside would have looked nice and modern without the speakers. It definitely is something unique. Maybe thats how they wanted it to be.

I don't think that point applies to our cars.

Corollas are weaksauce in stock form (save the 9th gen XRS and 4A-GE powered cars of the past).

I dont think you read my post well...

But, you had me think a little too. Slightly modding a corolla will achieve less than modding a civic. Parts for civics/integras/rsx's are so cheap and readily available.
