    1ZZ Rebuild Log

I posted this on another forum, but didn't get much input so here goes...

I'm going to be going through three 1ZZ's over the next few months one of them is out of a 01 Corolla that knocks occasionally, an 01 Prizm with a seized up engine, and a 02 Prizm that knocks on start up. I'm going to use the three motors to make two.

OK. So I started digging into the Corolla engine with 70K today. The guy I got it from said it knocked... sometimes. Upon disassembly you can see. This is one of the most filty engines I've ever seen. Make sure you look at the oil pickup.

Here's the Corolla motor and the '01 Prizm motor (with the tranny)

A pile of parts removed from the two Prizm's.

    The two Prizm's.

The '02's engine for the time being.

    Valve cover off.

    Loose timing chain.

    Filthy bottom engine.

    Clogged pickup.

And this is only 70K on this Corolla.

Here's the engine back from the machine shop. I ordered a bottom end gasket kit, rings, MWR main and rod bearings, oil pump, and engine assembly lube. The parts should start arriving tomorrow.

    Block was hot tanked
    [IMG]

    Crank was polished
    [IMG]

    Head was resurfaced
    [IMG]

    and block was honed

Just because it's not a Chevrolet... lol

Nice. My 98 with about 200k miles burns 1 qt. oil per 800 miles. I got a new 21K mile 2004 1zzfe going into it next month :burnout:

But yeah those 98-02 1zzfe have oil problems. I guess that's why you have 2 or 3 spares lol. And why I'm going with a 03+ 1zzfe.

    errr...used not new lol.

I thought it started in 98... my parents had a 99 Prizm that threw a rod at 80K because it ate so much oil.

I've heard the same amount of people with 98-99 1zzfe having this problem as the 00-02.

I think the reason you said 00+ have this problem is from the Celica folks. They got the 1zzfe in 2000 and they think it's the first year it came out. 2003+ is the oil problem free models according to them.

Well, I got it back from the machine shop. Over $200 in labor for resurfacing the head, honing the cylinders, polishing the crank, and hot tanking the engine. Then I dropped $300 on parts for the bottom end (oil pump, MWR main and rod bearings, bottom end seal kit, rings...). I'll post pictures soon.

Stock rebuild... I'm just using MWR main and rod bearings because of the oiling problems. Just a note for those who don't know, MWR bearings are actually ACL's.

ouch that pic is nutz wouldn't of thought the oil problem was that bad. man talk about gunk. makes me wanna open mine up to see what its like. I had a question when u pulled the valve cover off did the gasket stay in shape or were any of them in bad condition to reuse off any of the motors

Mine was fine... shape wise, but it was very brittle. They aren't too expensive, if you're pulling it off to do maintainance you might as well through a new one in.

I'm still waiting on some parts... I might go with an over bore.

Just a little update. I pulled out the old carpet because it was disgusting and it smelled awful. I'm glad I did because some of those rubber plugs in the floor were missing. So while I had the bottom part of the dash out I figured I'd switch out the shifter assembly, ECU, and wiring speed to the four speed stuff. The plugs on the 3 and 4 speed shifter assemblies are the same. You might be able to use the 3 speed assembly if you go to the 4 speed tranny.

I'm pretty sure the 4 speed ECU has one more plug than the 3 speed ECU.

Yes it does. I'm surprised how much smaller the 3 speed ECU is compared to the four speed. However the shifter assemblies share the same style plugs and number of pins in the plugs. There was an arguement whether or not you could use the 3 speed shifter in when swapping to a 4 speed car.

I can take some. What do you want specfically?

I'll try and take it tonight. Do you mean the 7A-FE or...?

The 4A-GE head is far superior. This head is for mileage and the cross section shows.

i dont know if i wouldnt say far superior. proven definatly. better yes. :Di have seen 650 h.p. on a 7a-fe head. and from what i read the 1zz fe head is similar to the 20v in design with one less valve per cylinder and i have seen these in the 500+ h.p. range. i will be buying a blacktop head soon hopefully before christmas. i just wanted to see what they looked like. ive never seen the intake before and i know i should not always believe what i read. but thanks its no big deal though this would be going in my ae86 and i wont be get to that project for at least another year or so.

I have a silvertop AE92 coupe as well, the the throttles are still on it. So even if I tried taking a picture you'd see the butterfly.

    Yep.

You need to log in, but that's impressive for that head.

I took pictures today, but can't find my camera cable of course.
