ULTIMATE suspension upgrade guide for 7th and 8th gen corollas!

Disclaimer: As many of you know I'm quite the suspension whore:p Personally I'm more interested in hitting 1 lateral G on street tires than running a 10sec quarter mile and throughout the years I've research and done all upgrade accordingly. To give myself a bit more credibility (but not to brag), I will just state that I am currently a mechanical engineering student with aspirations of working in the aftermarket suspension engineering or race car engineering field in the future. With that, here are the information I have gathered over the years.. much of what I say could be considered my opinion especially parts labeled "My Impressions" so feel free to disagree with me and convince me why i am wrong. I intended this writeup to serve as quick reference as well as an in depth discussion on everything suspension related on our cars and tried my best to make it user friendly. I apologise for any spelling or grammar errors on my part, English is not my first language.

The product here is listed in no particular order and I only will list reputable brands! No cheap noname ebay crap here. Please help me add to the list if you see anything not listed.

MSRP is obtained from the manufacturer's website unless otherwise specified.. Most online stores will sell products at up to 20% off MSRP. so SHOP AROUND!

Just in case you're wondering, yes I am bored:rolleyes:.

    Preface
As many of you should know by now the 6th 7th and 8th gen (88-02) Corollas share pretty much the exact same components in the 4 wheel McPherson suspension design. The McPherson suspension design primarily consists of a spring coiled around a strut and mounted to the chassis via an upper top hat mount and lower control arm(s). While this suspension design provides great advantages such as a compact design which maximize engine bay and trunk space, and a longer suspension stroke (great for rallying [The GC/GD WRX shares a very similar design]) it becomes a liability for performance on the tarmac. Since the McPherson strut suspension eliminates the upper control arm, positive camber changes during cornering (which is bad) is common and the shorter suspension stroke preferred by road racers is not present. (Which is why Civics/Integras have an advantage over us on the track.)

    Introduction
I will start off by discussing spring and shock rates. Spring rates are measured in kg/mm or lbs/in - the mass/weight required to compress the spring by 1mm or 1inch (ie. A 10kg/mm spring = it will take 10kg of mass to compress this particular spring by 1mm) (multiply or divide by 56 to convert from one unit to another). Obviously the higher the spring rate, the stiffer the spring. Shock rate or shock valving is a much more difficult equation but the gist of it is; you should have a shock valving that best match up to the spring rate… which brings us into dampening.

This is just a rudimentary discussion on the topic of suspension dampening; there are 3 cases, under damped, over damped, and critically damped. Under damped occurs when a spring is too stiff for the strut, this normally occurs when one upgrade springs while not upgrading the stock strut or if one choose a spring with a rate too high for the strut. This scenario will result in a bouncy ride and a high chance of bottoming out your suspension. The spring essentially pushes and pulls the strut piston at a rate that the strut is not set/valved for and this is in fact why your struts would wear prematurely or blow if you upgrade springs without upgrading struts (not as much because you are lowered). Over damped is the exact opposite, when your struts are valved too stiff for your springs. This scenario would result in a harsh ride because the chassis is absorbing much of the energy (instead of the strut) when you hit a bump. Critically damped is the best case scenario, it is when a shock is perfectly matched for the spring rate. This will be the case when you buy a full coilover/dampener kit (the springs and struts are engineered by the same company to work together), or if you are able to put together the perfect spring/strut combo. Once again this is a extremely rudimentary discussion, dampening or dissipation of energy relies on many variables such as speed and frequency.. If you want to learn more, be a mechanical engineer! It is discussed in differential equations, physics mechanics, and engineering dynamics..

    Lowering Spring:
Lowering springs are a mostly cosmetic upgrade. Most lowering springs offers a progressive spring rate meaning the spring starts out relatively soft but becomes increasingly stiffer the more it compresses.. which is a design for comfort. Some however offers a traditional linear spring rate which retains the exact same spring rate no matter how much or little it is compressed. A linear design is more performance orientated because it is more predictable seeing as the stiffness does not change.

    Coilover Sleeve:
Coilover sleeves allows the option of raising and lowering the ride height or preload the spring itself via a threaded sleeve/spring perch.

    Ground Control
    Part Numbers: SKU #8040
Features: Eibach ERS race spring allows the selection of multiple spring rates in increments of 25lbs/inch. Being a adjustable coilover you are able to lower your car from 0 to 2.5”
    MSRP: $399
    www.ground-control.com
Notes: You should be able to specify your spring rates at no extra cost prior to purchase, otherwise they will ship them with the standard 300lbs/in spring rates.
My Impressions: Take advantage of the fact that you can select your own spring rates!!! These coilovers are good for either street or race and that is dependant on the spring rate. It is recommended that you use koni inserts but if you choose a lower spring rate you can use Tokico, KYB, or others with great success.

    Full Coilovers:
Full coilovers are great because the manufacturer match the spring to the shock at the factory so there is no guess work involved. Most features a one way height/preload adjustment which is a spring perch threaded onto the shock body used to raise and lower the ride height. The higher-up grades of coilovers features a separate (2way) height and preload adjustment which allows one to adjust the height by moving the entire shock body up and down relative to the hub as opposed to moving the spring. This means the shock travel is not affected by height adjustment and you retain a full shock stroke no matter what height you are set at. Additionally the separate spring perch allow one to preload (pre-compressing or decompressing) the spring. Most features an adjustable shock dampener so one may dial in the shock valving from soft to firm to suit one needs. There are two types of shocks, twin tube and monotube. The twin tube design consist of a inner and a outer oil chamber, as the shock piston is compressed oil moves between the inner and outer tubes. The next design is the monotube which is exactly as it sounds. The twin tube is the most common and usually gives a more comfortable ride while the more expensive monotube is a much more advance and performance oriented design. The advantages of monotube is that it dissipate heat better since there exist no inner chamber. Additionally monotube can be mounted upside-down (inverted monotube) to decrease unsprung weight.

    Sway Bars:
A swaybar (also know as antiroll bar) links the lower left and right sides of the suspension component. On our Corollas, the front sway bar (22mm) is connected between the front left and right lower control arms. The rear sway bar (14mm) is connected between the left and right lower strut bodies. Essentially the sway bar is a torsion spring with the center held against the bottom of the chassis via bushings to serves as a pivot point. As one side (left or right) of the strut is loaded and compressed the bar would attempt to compress the other side. How much the unloaded side compresses is dependant on the diameter and the length of the 'arms' on either side of the sway bar. As the diameter increases the more moment of force is transferred from one side to the other. The same is true when one shortens the left and right 'arms' by mounting the endlinks closer to the center of the bar by way of a blade-adjustable sway bar. An adjustable swaybar feature 2 or 3 different holes on each side/arm used to adjust the “stiffness.” Generally speaking on a FWD car; increasing the stiffness of the front sway bar would increase the tendency of understeer while increasing the diameter of the rear sway bar would increase the tendency to oversteer. A large diameter rear sway bar set at full stiff would likely put you in “tripod mode” during hard cornering.

    Suspension Bushings:
The OEM bushings on our Corollas (and most factory cars) are made of a relatively soft rubber designed for comfort and minimizing road noise. As the car ages the rubber gets softer and handing becomes increasingly unpredictable. The solution is to upgrade to aftermarket polyurethane or metal spherical ball bushings. The advantage of using polyurethane bushing is they are stiffer and wears slower. Because of that fact the suspension geometry would stay constant and not change during cornering which gives the driver better steering response and a increase overall driving experience while only marginally sacrificing ride quality. However, metal spherical ball bushings dramatically increases ride harshness and road noise, they should only be equipped on race cars.

NOTE: Installation of aftermarket bushings requires removal of OEM rubber bushings. Removal of OEM bushings are a difficult task and sometime requires specialized tools such as a hydralic press. Installation of new bushing may also require an hydralic press. When in doubt, take it to the professionals.

    Alignment Products:
There are two ways to modify camber on our Corolla's McPherson strut suspension, 1) install camber plates top mounts, 2) install camber bolts at the bottom mounts. The camber plates replaces the OEM top hat and usually add a sperical pillow ball which help to eliminate unwanted camber changes during cornering. Camber bolts are a cheaper option, one would replace one or both of the strut to hub mounting bolts in order to pivot the wheel hub to modify camber.

    Suspension Braces, Bars, and Cages:
Like all modern cars, the Corolla is built with a unibody construction. The unibody automobile is constructed using thousands of robotic spot welds. While this provides the great advantage of making a car lighter, the chassis becomes much less ridged as a consequence. Many of today stock cars must receive additional seam/stitch welds and other bracing in order to be converted into a competitive race or rally car. Many of us would not go to the extent of stitch welding our street cars but adding chassis bracing such as a strut bar is something many of us can do. Bars and bracing helps add rigidity to the unibody chassis, especially at crucial suspension connection points thereby improving cornering stability by minimizing unwanted dynamic changes in suspension geometry. In short suspension and chassis braces helps improve rigidity and thus improves handling.

    gotcha, thanks!

MSRP is the price set by the manufacture and I got them straight off the manufacturer sites. The manufacturer usually sell them to the dealers at 20% off and the dealer/store/shop set the prices from there. I've considered not listing the MSRP because it varies so dramatically.. It is best to shop around to get the best price.

TRD USA is discontinued, so is Eibach.. I'm not sure if I should list them???

Also I can't seem to find Skunk 2 coilover sleeves on the S2 website anymore, perhaps discontinued?

I know about Ultra Racing and will be listing them in braces when I get the chance.

Oh no, I'm not listing anything for 9th gen because 1) they have their own site and 2) their suspension setups are so dramatically different from 7th and 8th gen that it would be much better to have a entirely separate thread.

Great writeup! Now I can look around for a good deal on coilover setups. Just reiterating here. Ultra Racing should be added since they make 3 point front strut bars, rear strut bars(required modification to fit though), braces, and fender braces for the 7th and 8th gen. Here my thread on it from a while back. http://trdforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=31319

OBX Gravitation coilover sleeves are also available for the 7th and 8th gen too. It's also utilized the singe perch design. I've read reviews saying their comparable to Ground Controls for a fraction of the price.

I can possibly get you the part numbers on teh TRD USA springs. I have them in a box in my room, I can get them now but I have class early tomorrow so I need my sleep. And from what I understand the TRD USA Springs offer 1.5" drop all around.

You're right that lowering springs are for cosmetic purposes only. When I was lowered on H&R springs it actually made the handling and ride worse. I came to realized this when I went back to stock springs. It was the GR2s that reduced roll, squat and dive. Not the springs.
