98 Corolla Engine Swap (another 1zz-fe)

I'm going to swap my old 1ZZ-FE (110k miles, 98 Corolla) with a younger version to try to get another few years out of my car, and have been trying to find out what headaches might be in my future. There's not much info out there on swapping out one 1ZZ-FE for another -- is this because it's easy, regardless of what year or car the 1ZZ-FE came from?

I can probably find a 98-99 1ZZ-FE used engine out there, but I'd prefer to pick up a new 1ZZ-FE with only a few miles on it. What headaches will I run into by replacing my non-vvti engine with a newer one? Can I just drop it in without making any changes to the computer, etc?

Any other advice before I start my first engine swap?

yes your right 98-99 didnt have vvti til 2000+,swapping the long block should be direct fit but you also need the computer because of the vvti and the harness.if i were i would rebuild your motor since you pulling it out,go to http://monkeywrenchracing.com/ or do something cool like swapping a 2zz motor but the cost is expensive.

you can swap out but chances are you will need a different ECU and wiring harness, then you should be able to swap them. but your best bet to to just stick to the non-vvti version. i swapped out mine three times but it stick with the same motor until the last one that i finally had built. its pretty easy to swap them out . BTW your corolla with only a 110K miles it not bad at all. i've seen these engines run up to 250k plus miles. Just maintaiin it and don't race the engine and it shoudl last a good while. i replace mine for being stuipd and crap. now my rolla is being drivien by my parents becasuse my "new" car drinks up gas pretty badly in the city.

110k is nothing on a toyota motor. Unless you have symptoms of a bad motor leave it in and just take care of it. It'll treat you right.

here's the question, how is your stock engine currently running?

if there is nothing wrong with it, ex. white smoke or beaten up piston rings, then don't go for a swap, unless you want more power...

and if you regularly have it tuned up, then going for an engine swap shouldn't be in your option...

if you plan to swap the engine with the same engine (but with fewer miles on it), its a direct bolt on affair... just retain your old engine harness and ecu...

Hey at least it's not TN where there's a thread where one time posters all start new posts without using the search button every two seconds. This is the first one in a while. LOL :D

i have a question. my piston in my 2001 corolla shot through my oil pan and my friend has a 1996 corolla dx that i can get the engine from to put in my car. my question is will i need to change out the ecu as well, and will i have problems if my corolla is automatic and my friends is a stick shift??

    -Thanks

i dont know if the tranny bell housing will match up with that older engine, just try and find a replacement or go 2zz much easier

and read the thread/SEARCH! things have already been answered

You do realize that you're swapping in a completely different motor from a previous model. The transmission might be compatible, but you'll need to change the ECU for sure. If that's the case, you'll need to find a 93-97 Corolla automatic ECU. The two motors are very different. I don't even know if the engine mounts will line up.

BTW peoples, doesn't this sound like another troll post? :D
