    KYB struts gone after 135k

    Yo,

My KYB struts are both bad in the rear after 5 years/135k miles on it. Short story is that I took my car in for new tires and the mechanic said both rear struts have too much freeplay therefore I get wheelhop. I already noticed how my old tires have the bald patterns and cupping from the alignment being off every couple of months.

I want to try Bilstein struts now. Anyone know where I can get some?

Okay. Struts are $480 at Autozone without tax and shipping vs. $376+free shipping at
    http://www.eshocks.com/bil_veh4.asp?Model_Index=4Q61&Manf=Bilstein&SubChar=Q

I am tempted to order these but I dunno how good of a feedback Eshocks.com is.....

135k miles is alot for struts. Are you lowered? I have Tein S-techs, but I have been trying to decide between KYB and Tokico. I figured the KYBs would go bad quicker because they are not a "performance' strut, but I have heard that the Tokico blues can have a rough ride.

I would go with Bilsteins as well. With the right springs to go with them, they can beat out expensive full coilover sets.

I had eibach springs with the KYBs. I'm leaning toward Bilsteins because it's my daily driver and not a performance machine. Okay, I'll order these probably the end of today and gonna install these before the summers get too hot here.

I've got H&R springs and Tokico Blues on my car. Not a rough ride at all. And BOTH my springs AND my shocks are BLUE. :D

dunno about the tokico, but I think my rear KYBs didn't have the proper dampening needed for the Eibach springs because they both blow out around the same time. The fronts seem fine. They last over 100k so I can't say anything bad. I think the KYBs have lifetime warrenty too, but I'm looking to see the difference in the Bilstein so I don't care about the warranty.

As alot of my posts here start...

This may be the truck owner in me, but 135k on a set of struts is pretty outstanding. My stock ones (Tokico I think) were done-done-done at 80k. But I couldn't get them swapped out until I used the Bilstein around 100k.

80k is the expected life span for passenger vehicles as well.

my tokicos never blew when I had them and as far as I know they're still running stong on my buddies car.. I consider them a better setup than KYB GR-2 as KYB are a factory equivalent replacement used by many suspension shops.

I bought my Tokico blues from toyhookup@yahoo.com on eBay - I did have one go bad early, but apparently they have a lifetime warranty. He sent me a new one, I returned the old one and was credited for it (minus shipping). :)

they're worn, just not to the point of being blown.

I think my struts have gone bad too. I had my professional mechanic friend tell me that. Except it's not the rear struts. I guess this is a good excuse to get a completely new suspension. :D
