    McCains Gas Tax Holiday

McCain is proposing a gas tax holiday:

I think it would be pointless, and it only a election tactic to get to more votes.

Agreed. We need the taxes for roadwork and improvements more than the $1.80-$3.60 a tank in savings, in my opinion. Besides, someone else will figure out how to turn that saved 18 cents into profit for themselves.

I think the reasons for the high fuel prices need investigation before a rash move like a temporary tax break happens. If it's a production bottleneck, why haven't any new refineries been built here in the last 30+ years? If it's straight up corporate greed....well, I guess a couple Texans with big oil ties aren't going to let that come out, lol.

Its the strength of the dollar that is hurting us the most in regards to gas prices.

    I'm confused on this.

The station I fill up here in Denver has a sticker right on the pump that says, "Price includes 40.3¢ federal tax."

So where does he get this 18.3 cents?

And continuing from that, screw his 18 cents. My view on gasoline is that it has EVERYTHING to do with no new refineries being built couple right along with petroleum exec's needing an additional Enzo in their garage.

I tell you, I shot myself in the foot buying a truck, because I'm approaching the $80 a tank fillup and it's killing my pocket book.

We could increase our oil supply if the environmentalists would let us tamper with the environment of the white alaskan titmouse but even if we could drill, there aren't enough refineries to handle the additional flow.

Build refineries and pull the **** out of your @$$ and drop the damn price.

I wouldn't be surprised if the rising gas prices are Bush's idea of making a profit. I hear rumors all the time saying that Bush is in on the gas prices. I wouldn't necessarily believe them, but then again Bush is an oil man.

Its obvious that you dont like Bush, and like to put the blame for everything in his lap.

How would Bush have a say in it? He is not a part of OPEC

And if you really want to get technical, go after your particular state about the taxes that they are charging you.

I think there is more in play here than just OPEC. You've got oil companies raking in record profits, quarter after quarter, all the while saying prices will go up due to "the switch to summer blends and refineries going down for maintenance, which may create shortages in some areas" and yet, no one seems to be paying attention to that.

Is it the EPA, the tree huggers, the politicians or the oil companies responsible for the lack of newer(and safer) refineries over here? They've admitted in the past the problem is getting the crude refined... Who's hand is in what pocket....who's dick is buried in which ass? What is the benefit to keeping the refinery bottleneck?

They do know they've got us over a barrel and they've attempted to appease us with the pseudo-promise of cheaper biofuel....but have you noticed the rise in commodity prices? Is a .30 per gallon "savings" worth the reduced gas mileage and higher food costs? Ethanol is setting up to cost us in the middle more than $4/gallon gas ever will.

The declining dollar plays a part, but really, this mess has been going on for years. {puts on tinfoil hat} The corporations know we are all at their mercy, that we'll keep paying whatever it is they want to charge, and they'll continue to get richer. There is no motivation to change that.

Take a look again...Id be sure to bet that it doesnt say FEDERAL before that tax.

18 cents federal tax, and Colorado charges 22 cents state tax.
