Recall Watch: Toyota, GM recalling 660,000 vehicles for window defect

Joint manufacturing ventures allow both automakers to share resources and platforms, but unfortunately, it also means they share problems. Such is the case with GM and Toyota, whose NUMMI plant in Fremont, California, put out 540,000 Toyota Matrixes, Corollas and 123,00 Pontiac Vibes with faulty bolts that hold in the glass on the two front doors. The 660,000 2003-2004 vehicles equipped with power windows are being recalled after 500 complaints, 36 claimed injuries and one crash (?!) were reported. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is calling for both automakers to recall the affected vehicles and replace the faulty bolts at no charge.

I figured mine was something wrong w/ it last year cuz I would push the button & the window would jus partially fall down halfway. So I opened it up myself & fixed it.

My dad blamed it on the tint job I had done...since it was only the driver side...now I have something to show him that it wasn't my fault.

I wonder if they'll fix just the ones that have been broken or if they'll replace parts on all four windows

the problem is they didn't locktite the bolts holding the power window sissor assembly so they come loose over time, it's just that simple.

Just out of curiosity, how would you come to the assumption that a loose window was caused by window tint?

they only do the front 2 windows... and because one has already broken they will only do the other one... BTW. got mine done on thursday and its wonderful.. no more clicking sound.. :)

actually the bolts wer not torqued down enough thats why they came loose, read the recall notice.

Did you get a recall letter from Toyota or did you just walk in?

You'd be surprised, there have been few cases that they don't adjust the window right or leave the seals put wrong too.... not sure if it'll directly cause the issue to get worse due that the bolt was already messed up but certainly a possibility to consider.

my dad thought that it was the window tint because everyone or company does it a little bit differently and they were the only one that had touched my door and/or window.

That's what I thought had happened with my car too but DR called me and told me about the possible recall. I'm gonna call Toyota next week and get that recall taken care of.

I got the letter... don't just walk in service writers don't like that and on a recall they only have enough parts for the letters they sent out... so wait for your letters..

Do ya'll go to some wierd tint installers? Every window tint I've had installed nothing is taken apart. Only thing on the door they touch is to roll the window up and down as they apply the tint. Seals have nothing to with window stability, the glass track does.
