NHTSA probing windows on Toyota Matrix, Corolla and Pontiac Vibe

Filed under: Plants/Manufacturing, Recalls/TSBs, Pontiac, Toyota

Toyota's Matrix wagon, Corolla sedan and its mechanical twin the Pontiac Vibe sport wagon are all in hot water after motorists have begun to issue complaints about their power side-front windows. Reports indicate the windows are getting stuck, making popping noises, and in some cases shattering and injuring passengers. To date, more than 503 complaints have been received by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which is currently looking into the issue. Ultimately, the investigation may trigger a recall affecting 676,747 vehicles manufactured during the 2003 and 2004 model years at NUMMI, the GM-Toyota joint-venture plant that found itself in a pot of hot water after an employee accused her superiors last November of letting defective vehicles leave the facility.
Interesting to note: This may become the first windows recall that doesn't require PC owners to download a patch. (Hardy har har.)

nummi built cars are turning into crap. I had to put the entire power window track back together in my taco after the track bearing broke off due to the bolts not being torqued properly.

It's because it's tainted with GM union employee indifference, lol. Note they didn't say anything about the Canadian-built siblings.

Our rolla had this exact problem and we had to fix it ourselves because the dealer couldn't find the problem. The problem is the scissor lift screws weren't tightened enough during assembly. By retightening the bolts and applying thread lock the problem hasn't returned. Our 04 rolla with less than 15K miles ran in to this problem; both driver and passenger side front. It would click so loud when it engaged the glass we feared it cracking the glass (wonderful metal on glass sounds)

yup that was the exact same problem! The bearing actually poped out of mines when the bolt fell out and the weight of the window were on top of it.

Next time I take a tour of nummi, i'm hopping out of the tram and kicking the guy who's putting the side windows in the cars.

The Toyota plant we have here in Cambridge, Ontario is known for producing high quality cars year after year, there hasn't really been any major recalls in recent memory. However, I think the Canadian built 9th gen Corolla and Matrix still have the 300,000km / 300,000 mile odometer limit issue.

That really sucks to hear for you guys in the States.

US labor sucks. It's no wonder jobs are being outsourced. It costs more to build in the US and you have to deal with gay unions which take forever to negotiate with.

So what happens after 300k? I've got an Ontario car, and I could tell the difference between it and a friend's mother's NUMMI built LE of the same year. Her LE seemed to have more cabin noise.

The only weird semi-related thing I've got is some wind noise at the top of the driver side door when the air temp falls below freezing, but I think it's the rubber weatherstripping contracting from the cold. It doesn't do it when it's warmer outside and it's way less annoying than the Saturn I had. That thing had wind noise, rattles and creaks sitting still.
