    Engine Movement

    When I let out my clutch to take off or down shift to engine break I get a bucking thing that happens like the engine is rocking back and forth, that car has been doing this for a while and I suspect my motor mounts are getting tired (they are in tact but rubber is soft). What are my options (2001 Toyota Corolla). I cannot find poly motor mount inserts or standalone mounts anywhere and I'll destroy another stock set. I was thinking about creating a DIY torque strap to go from the strut tower stabilizer to the top of the engine but dont know where to start exactly. And I was looking on ebay at torque dampers but I don't really know if they work? If they did I could easily weld up my own brackets to make one work. What does everyone think?

    yeah when my car shifts, the car jolts forward... i hate it but i've come to live with it. i dont know exactly how to fix that.

    Yeah if you rev the engine via the throttle body and watch the engine it moves like 1/2", imagine how much more it moves when you actually put the cars weight against it. I think for stock HP and easy driving the stock mounts would last but the way us enthusiest drive the stock mounts get tired after a few years and this happens. I am going to design a torque strap and see if it helps the problem and take some video next weekend, if it works out maybe i'll make a jig and start producing them for people that want them.

    barn, mine does the same thing and i heard installing a torque damper will help alot. i just caress the clutch a little when up shifting, and downshifting i find heel-toe down shifting works really well to smooth the transition so you have to kinda know what revs to rev it too when down shifting but it does wear the clutch down a bit

    lol well try just revving the engine, downshifting, clutching than braking. i can make a video when i get home of how i used to do it before i got good at heel toe

    you probably suck at heel toe because of the horrible pedal placement from toyota. I couldn't do it until I got a razo adjustable accelerator pedal. It brought the pedal closer to the brake pedal so I could easily bleep the throttle while on the brakes.

    As for motor mounts, I DIY filled mines with Devcon Flexane 94.

    You could either pour it on top of the rubber or the more hardcore method which was to cut out all the rubber crap and cast a solid urethane motor mount.

    I also have a ingalls engine dampener sitting in my box of goodies which I will put on as soon as I can get around to making a custom mount.

    i was gonna say the same thing....

    i would just get another set of stock mounts and just fill the gaps with urethane...

    Thats a good idea, I'm gonna have to give that a try, how much is the material and do you have pics of the finished install? ALso how much of a diff did it make?

    It got a little sticky so I didn't take any more pics. The 1lb container were enough to completely fill 2 hollow out mounts and still have some left over. If you are planning on just filling the mounts while leaving the rubber in, pick up some FL-20 primer to increase adhesion to rubber. The flexane comes in 60, 80, and 94 score, with 94 being the stiffest. I used 94 and after it fully harden it felt rock solid! It might've been overkill. The goods are being able to chirp 2nd easily on a stock engine with only intake/exhaust. The bads are the excess vibrations being transfered into the cabin.

    I have the proper stuff to fill your mounts with, brand new and unopened. It's a two part resin. Hit me back if interested. I can't remember how much I paid for it, but I'll look into it if you want it.

    JspeXAE102 mentioned a great option, that's one thing you can do. The other thing is get a generic torque dampener and custom-install it. That's what we ended up doing with the '01 Turbocharged Corolla that we built, the only thing I noticed was that it makes a good bit of noise which is irritating (to me).

    I was thinking about making a custom bracket for a torque dampener, where dod you guys end up mounting it to the engine and frame at?

    There is a 14mm bolt on the belt side engine mount that would be perfect for mounting a L bracket for one end of the torque dampener. On the other end I plan on using a old strut bar mount plate from my old cheapo ebay strut bar.
