    vvti.net hacked

If you use the same password on both website I suggest you change it immediately (on trd forums) as to avoid somebody taking over your account!

Just changed mine. It was only a matter of time before it got hacked, being an abandoned site for a while.

there was talk of the sites merging a long time ago.. but it turned in to a financial mountain where we just couldn't afford the asking price for vvti.net.. so it lives on, zombiefied.

I didn't know there was a way to delete your account. You can ask a mod to erase it maybe.

there isn't any way. it would take a moderator. But, I would just leave the account there at this point. Nothing says you have to delete it when you stop posting.

Just because they hacked it, it does not mean they have your password

vbulletin uses MD5 to encrypt the passwords, so even if they got the whole MySql DB (highly unlikely) they can not see what your password is.

I just went there and it seems OK. Where is it hacked?

the top poster is hacked, sorta a signature left on the site to say it was hacked.

also md5 is easy to reverse if you have a fast enough computer. assuming the person was good enough to break in to the server they're good enough to de-md5 things

You mean by brute force or dictionary attack? But who has the time to do that? If anything it would be the admin account, and even getting that one is not going to yield all the users passwords. I really do not care about that site, but it is hard to pass up blanket statements like "change all your passwords! the site has been hacked!" As you know vbulletin is one of the least hacked bulletin board software packages out there, but I can see that vvt-i's copy is pretty outdated, but even version 3.0 was practically hacker proof, and even if hacked it is still hard to get the password database.

I must be blind, but I do not see where it was hacked. the post number may be a simple database corruption which may well be since it is documented here: http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=19896 and it is also the largest prime number, which may well mean a bad DB.

My guess is that the forum databasaes are in dire need of maintenance. Since it is not being maintaned, god knows what may be happening with them.

it could be database corruption but I'd see that as less likely than a hack. he's running 3.0.0 RC4 which is about the oldest unpatched 3.0 in existence. Also, yes, brute force attacks take time but if they have a rainbow table precompiled it only takes a day or so. also vbadvanced homepage was discontinued years ago due to broken features & security holes. vvti.net is the only site on the internet I know of that still runs it.

When you submit your new password, it will give you the error message. However, it still goes through and your password is changed. Just go back to the main page. The next time to you log in, you'll need your new password.
