Where's the sound coming from? If you park, raise the hood and manually open the throttle from the engine bay do you still hear it? Does it only happen in certain gears? certain rpm range?

haha I feel you. You should try typing drunk if you haven't already before. :D

The noise seems like the valves. But I don't know if that would affect shifting.

I heard that you shouldn't do a tranny flush unless you absolutely have to and that it's reasonable enough to just change the little amount or whatever you can get out of it every 10-15k or so to be on the safe side.

if you have a manual tranny then you dont have tranny fluid.. you have gear oil.. and you dont flush manual trannys. Just drain and refill every 30K.

7th gen Celica parts should fit. But before you go overboard and dump the tranny - drain the old oil out and run it through a filter (paper paint strainer type deal works perfectly). If you got chunks of metal in there - then you just toasted the tranny. If the oil looks OK, no chunks, refill with a good quality gear oil. If you want - try the so called "Scot Grey Mix"
    http://www.club3g.com/forum/eclipse-performance/82585-scot-grey-rre-manual-transmission-mix.html
The DSM guys swear by it - supposed to help problems with gritty trannys and harsh gear engagement - costs about $30. If you don't feel comfortable with that stuff - then try a good synthetic or semi-synthetic gear oil. Fluid changes can work wonders for noisy or temperamental transmissions. Not a miracle cure - will not fix mechanical problems in the transmission - but does help with noise and grinding of gears by making sure you have the right mix of grip and slip between gears.

Then check your shift linkages and bushings. Sometimes something gets jammed up in there and stiffens up those bushings. Makes the gearbox pop out of gear and hard to shift.

If that doesn't work - then you have to swap in a new tranny (if it is tranny related). But you really haven't wasted too much time pr money - just make sure you burn through other options before you $hitcan the old transmission.

the trans is just a drain and a fill hole... pretty simple and straight forward. i just drain my trans and diff into a low profile drain pan with a rag or cloth over the pans hole to catch particulate and inspect the fluid.

with the linkage they will probably just spray some white lithium grease or some kind of spray lubircant into the bushings, dont let them fool you.

it's actually really easy on a FWD. You basically just need a drain pan and one of those funnels with a straw attached to it to refill (or a pump). But getting the fill plug open is a pita sometimes because of its position in relation to the lower control arm.

dont forget people... if you ever service anything on your car. MAKE SURE YOU GET THE FILL PLUG OUT BEFORE YOU DRAIN ANY FLUIDS!!! if not, you have an empty trans, etc, with no good way to fill it.

That is a great point - I personally found out the hard way on my first import after growing up working on MOPAR, GM, and FoMoCo differentials. I mean even the venerable Ford 9" rear end - had only a single plug, some earlier ones had no plugs at all.

two words. screw that. find a tranny in a junkyard or just purchase a brand new one (they're only $1,530). If you want to shave some more costs, get the tranny and a new clutch and I'll swap em for $350+misc parts you may need (things like gear oil and stuff). Should take all of a day.

Holy smokes - all syncros and repalce the shift forks. That's pretty brutal. The price the dealer quoted you is pretty ridiculous - for that kind of money, you could go buy an identical Corolla for not that much more. Double that and get a mint condition one with less than 50K miles (according to KBB).

If the syncros are all burned up - could be a bad clutch release cylinder or it ran low on oil (pretty common, as lots of people forget to check this). As if it doesn't fully disengage the clutch and can chew up the syncos prematurely. Same deal with speed shifting or resting you hand on the shifter. Puts a great deal of stess on the syncros and burns them up pretty fast. Using a higher quality gear oil will help but easiest way it to mentally slow down the shifts. Sounds weird, but you will end up shifting faster eventually. As for the forks wearing out - that is weird. Could be those little bearings popped out of the shaft that the forks ride on. I accidentally popped some of those out when rebuilding a 5-speed and they were a PITA to get back in.
