    Question

Situation: I turbo my 01 Corolla and had a Greddy speed cut controller no limit installed, now the vehicle travel in excess of 115 mph.

Question: Can I replace the speedometer in the dash to one that can read more than 115 mph? If so which one?

Sure - but where the hell can you run past 115MPH that you really need to worry about the speed? I assume that this is only on a track - most don't even look at a speedo, they have enough on their plates just keeping the car pointed the right way.

Before I worry about replacing the speedo - I'd make sure the car can take the extra loads at speed.

You'll have to use an aftermarket speedometer which you can bolt in front of the stock location. Or perhaps you can have some custom gauge faces made the overlap on top the stock one.

You will need an aftermarket one.

Because I can if I want to. Why mod a vehicle if not to achieve the very best? Some of you guys sound very discouraging. I hear about mod your exhaust, mod your suspension, mod your intake, mod your breaks, swap your engine with one that is stronger or mod your internal to achieve higher hp, but DON'T GO PASS 115 mph. It seem that some you lost your vision as to why we are here at this and other corolla websites. Out in the street they tell us we can not mod our corollas because it's a waste of time. Yet there are guys out there proving them wrong. I just want a speedometer that will reflex what my coralla can do and if i need to go pass 115 mph she can do it with now problems. I'm breaking some grounds and I will keep you posted. Thanks for the good comments.

Well its just being practical. Where can you drive over 115? On city streets? Most driving is confined to city and highway. I think acceleration is more important than top speed. The true top speed on a corolla won't be much higher than 115 anyways. The aerodynamics of the car just don't allow it to go any higher. I mean there's a reason why the factory put the limiter in there.

I mod my car to get horsepower and torque gains, not to get a higher top speed. As rollatuner said, there is a reason why there is a limiter there in the first place.

I have family up in NJ. You can hit those speeds on the Garden State Parkway. Be safe.

I saw it for 170 somewhere else. There are cheaper noname ones on ebay also.
The Imoni or RSM from Apexi is another option but I lthink HUDs are more spiffy.

    *edit
Actually I think the Apexi RSM removes the speed governor on some vehicles so with that you can kill two bears with one stone.

I wonder why, maybe its because I lost two of my best friends to high speed driving, yes i have paid out the ass end for putting shit on my car but i can tell you some of the reasons i don't go so fast is becasue im endagering other motorists, yeah i know my car can do over 115, because it has been track tested, thats it, other than that if i go very fast speeds it only when there is no traffic in the morning and where i live back in texas we have extremely long straightaways. other than that the car does not see past 85(freeway speeds), also because my gas will go down faster than a V8 in high mode.all i am saying is don't be surprised if you get a surprise at a high rate of speed, wether or not its your problem.

I understand and thank you for your concern. I'm also sorry for your lost. I'm not a reckless driver and the majority of my driving is at 75 to 85 mph on the Highway. I'm a father with two young kids, (12 and 9) and believe me I want to be around for a long time. The speedometer change is more cosmetics than practical. And what I mean is I want it to reflex what the vehicle can do. Example, my mother's Sonata speedometer reads up to 150 mph, but I don't think most people nor my mother is going to travel at that top speed. Even I as I drive her car while Dr. Tweak has my vehicle i would not try to take it up that fast. I hope we can continue to provide tech support for our members and keep the moral convictions out. Maybe there was a misunderstanding of my intent. That is just my opinion. We need new information on research and development, trial and error to keep us inform. Thanks .

Update: My 01 Corolla was tuned again after the Greddy speed limiter cut was install and he has it at 229 whp with 10 lbs of boost. Stock internals. I can redline it at 4th now and still have 5th gear to play with. He will update everybody soon.

I personally agree that one should exercise caution driving at high speeds on public roads, and that a lot of people out there who do it are not responsible about it at all. That said, knowing Jerry personally, I can tell you guys that he's very responsible and doesn't race his car around like a retard.

For a lot of you reading that he wants a speedo that can read higher, it sounds silly because you know that it's very hard to get your car up to that speed. Well with Jerry's car, the end of fourth gear (around 120ish, to answer MovieSTAR's question), comes VERY quickly. Honestly it probably takes 5-10 seconds to get from highway cruising speed to speed limiter. For a car with that kind of power, a more suitable speedo might be in order.

For example, my '92 Ford SHO had a speedo that went to 140mph. With only 190whp, it would easily get there, in fact I used to hit 140 every day on my way home from work (very early morning hours, totally abandoned highway). Now, that's not to say that it was a great idea, but when you take a much better car with nearly 40whp more, then you can see that it isn't silly at all to want a longer range speedo.

Heck! The speedo in my Lexus goes to 160! And it's SLOW! HAHAHA

I'll go update the turbo thread so you guys can see what's up with it.
