Rotaries are always bit iffy for me. The apex seals go fast and don't they leak or burn oil fairly early? I like the way the motor is really small though. I worked on an FC before and the motor was literally the size of a toaster. Great for weight reduction and weight ratios.

apex seals don't necessarily go fast - it depends on the motor, whether or not it has a turbo, how it's driven, etc. they CAN leak/burn oil easily.

basically, they make a horrible daily driver...i can almost guarantee it'll spend most of its time not moving if it's got a turbo and has had the engine modified in any way. if it's n/a, it's got a much better chance of being reliable - they have about a 200k lifespan if treated well. mine went for 212k before a friend flooded the motor and blew the seals.

rebuilds are far from difficult, but are tedious.

a common (and recommended) motor swap would be an LS1 - kits are available for all generations of RX7. if you have the money to afford an aluminum LS1, it'll fit better in the engine compartment of a first gen (which i believe is the car in question), and is about the same weight as the stock rotary - and puts out a TON of power, with a conservative fuel economy of 23mpg highway. one can expect to get worse fuel economy with a stock rotary. a benefit of going for an aluminum LS1 is the balance of the vehicle - it's not thrown off by tossing in that V8. a friend of mine has done a couple of swaps like this (LS1 in an FD, 350 in an FC) and another friend has put both a 350 and an SR20DET in his FB. interestingly enough, the 350 and tranny use the stock motor/tranny mounts in the FB. this was my goal at one point, and i would like to do this eventually...a lack of garage prevents this project at this time.

i will say this, however - in Denver, DO NOT KEEP AN RX7 FOR A DAILY DRIVER.
