Seriously, though..I imagine you're looking for a software firewall? Try ZoneAlarm..

Avast! is proven as reliable software. it is on par with AVG, but AVG is going paid only.

www.extremeoverclocking.com forum members recommend it as a free piece of software. half of the IT staff at work use it at home because it's not a resource hog like Norton, but it's just as good. it updates weekly - more frequently than Symantec's business version. i've been using it for the past few years on all my computers, and it has never corrupted on me...and i've never had a virus. i run the Trend Micro online scan every once in awhile to keep Avast! in check, and it never finds anything.

avg blows anyway. one of the worst accuracy scanners on the market. At one time I had 4 viruses on my computer and 2 trojans and it found nothing. installed anti-vir and it found everything.

avast and anti-vir score at the top of the charts with commercial software.

yeah it was good 2-3 years ago maybe, but now their engine is so weak compared to other free products it doesn't catch a lot of stuff. it's faster than anything else.. but less accurate

here's the results of an ondemand test from av-comparatives back in august

according to this test avast didn't do so hot either

    antivir 99.51%
    AVK 99.68%
    Avast Pro 92.01%
    AVG Pro 91.69%
    bitdefender pro 95.21%
    F-Secure 99.07%
    kaspersky 99.06%
    mcafee virusscan 92.40%
    norton 98.13%

read em and weep : here

^^I thought norton would be lower than that...I had it on our old computer and it was a nuisance more than it helped...Im not surprised with where mcafee is tho...

the bad part about anti-vir is the popup when it updates to advertise their full version (which uses the same scanning engine).. but if you google you can find ways to 'disable' the popup if you have xp pro

I installed anti-vir and for the first time in 2 years, my computer f4roze up. Everytime it loaded it completely slowed down my computer. I got so frustrated that I uninstalled it. I even gave it a 2nd chance thinking I did something wrong at first but nope...still froze up my computer.

the pc is only 2 years old. I have Windows XP on it, AMD 1.99GHz. I don't think its a trojan cause it'll give me errors when updating. I even did the manual update and it still slows my computer down. I'm wondering if it has to do with having another antivirus software installed. when I close a specific part of the software the computer will run fine. I'm gonna give it one more shot, but if it happens again, then so be it.

yes, it's because you have more than one piece of antivirus software installed. download one piece of software, disconnect it from the 'net, uninstall old software, install new software.

Actually, I installed it again. I know what I did wrong. I did the custom install and decided not to install Guard. This time I installed it and it works perfect. No lag time and no freezing. I even updated the software with no problem.

So I'll keep it installed and use it more often.

I use NOD32 from eset. Look it up here...http://www.eset.com/

I've been running it for two years now with absoluetly no complaints. I love it. I runs in the background and has caught every trojan, virus, malicious code, etc, that I've been stupid enought to let through.

The home basic version of Vista will run fine on my pc. If you go to the microsoft website they have a program that runs a check on your computer to see if its okay to install Vista. It'll even find hardware and software that are compatible with it. Unfortunately, alot of my software isn't supported...but my hardware is which means I can run Vista if I don't mind losing all that software, if there isn't an update for it.
