The head's off... and here's what it looks like underneath...

Steve and I got the head off the car last night. Here's what we found.

The piston head sitting sideways in the first cylinder. The other pistons look fine and the head gasket is undamaged. There's an exceptionally heavy amount of carbon deposits and oil on the piston head compared to the rest. I guess all the blow by oil ended up here.

The piston was completely covered in crud.

Yup, the rods are definitely a weak part here. The rest of it is probably sitting in the oil pan. Looks like the crank shaft took a beating as well.

Both intake valves are destroyed from hitting the piston. One of them is even cracked.

You can see how they're bent in this close up.

A better shot of the piston once I cleaned most of the crud off.

The underside is missing quite a bit. Glad these are getting replaced with forged pistons.

Oh, and here's a show of the holes that got blown in the side of the block. I'm so glad I had a fire extinguisher on hand.

This shot's not as clear, but you can see both holes in it.

WOW man. That's a lot of damage. :( So you buying a new block or going to try and rebuild this one? Is there a way to patch holes in the block itself?

man... thats pretty rough. what were the conditions when you said this blew? werent you part throttle accelerating to beat a light?

when my first one blew i short shifted into 5th at full throttle and boost shot up to just over 15psi and my afrs went in the mid 13s... and i just melted through the side of one piston and broke ringlands on three of them, the thing still ran though.

    *knocks on wood*

i've had three total boosted rolla motors and haven't blown one.

    1st -> ~30k boosted (car was wrecked)
2nd -> ~26k boosted (motor was at 100k when i got car, swapped it as precaution)
3rd -> ~32k boosted (motor still runs, looks great internally)

wierd man... that poor rod just had enough... lol

Vamp, your motor doesn't look quite as bad as mine did but looks like we both suffered similar damage.

Actually, I think I know what happened now. Back in June, I hyrdolocked the car. It ran fine once we siphoned the water out of the cylinders. I did a compression check and all the cylinders were in spec, although the first one was slightly lower than the others. Looking back, it seems like I may have bent the rod slightly at that time. Then, my catch can got clogged up and sent blowby into the intake via the crank case breather probably didn't help much. Anyway, it looks the extra stress took it's toll and the rod let go on the upstroke, sending the piston flying into the open intake valves.

Lets just say I have everything you can order from MWR for our engine except for the valve springs and cams.
